After interviewing this year’s freshmen and seeing their first impressions of high school classes, the Dispatch was also interested in their perspective on the clubs and sports. How did they like them compared to middle school, and was there anything they think should be changed with how Del Mar runs their extracurriculars?
“I feel like high school sports are more fun because it’s just like, there’s a different energy in the locker room, and the coaches have that energy too,” said Romeo Moran, a Del Mar football player. “I would definitely consider joining another sport.”
Freshmen’s opinions on how Del Mar handles sports varied slightly, with some enjoying it, and others seeing room for improvement.
When Jamileth Paulink, a sports player and club participant at Del Mar was asked about her expectations for high school, she thought “It was around the same as I expected, a lot more energy in the teams, and clubs.”
“The only thing I wish was different here is, I wish there was more support for the sports other than the main popular ones, like basketball and football,” voiced Rowan Baker.
Lizett Alba, another freshmen student said “Yeah, I mean overall, I think I enjoy how they do things here with the sports and clubs.”
Club wise, most freshmen enjoyed how clubs are handled and their variety. “They’re very supportive in the clubs, and I like how it’s run by the students. Like there’s very little teacher interference.” Khaison Nguyen expressed.
