The JV girls’ soccer team had a rough loss (0-2) against Yerba Buena High School, last Thursday, Jan. 9.
“Despite the loss, I feel good about it because it’s our first one, and it’s a learning experience,” JV coach Albert Airem said.
Airem says regardless of the outcome some key takeaways from the game were having a new goalie, he says who did well, and more girls are playing extremely hard. Some aspects Airem says worked well was the team forming triangles on the field, also called option A and option b, when there is an open passing lane.
“When somebody is trying to pass a ball as long as the triangle is formed on the field you get option A and option B” He says.
Airem thinks these girls can work better as a team by passing a ball with more strength to the goal instead of making a simple pass.
“In my opinion it’s not all about the wins, it’s about getting better, and today we took a step back but hopefully we take two steps forward,” Airem says about the loss of this game.
Flor Farfan, a freshman, says some challenges she faced in the game were getting put in a lot of pressure and not being able to make good goals. Farfan says some plays she could have done better on were kicking the ball toward her teammates because she felt she couldn’t do it right.
“I’d really like to improve on kicking the ball more further and really trapping the ball,” Farfan says.
She says her and her teammates supported each other by hyping each other up and communicating during half-time.
“After all I felt that as a team we did pretty good but there were some things we could work on,” she says.
Jamileth Paulino, a freshman, says she could have done better in kicking the ball, which ended up going to the opponents.
“I want to improve on my passes and try to kick harder and higher than how I normally do,” she says.
Some ways that she and her teammates supported each other was by communicating and supporting each other during plays.
“After all I feel happy because we all tried and didn’t give up,” Paulino says.
