Freshmen First Impressions

As the school year kicked off, a new group of freshmen filled the halls, and adjusting to high school can be an overwhelming experience. So after having a few months to familiarize themselves with their new school, we decided to ask these students a crucial question: Is high school living up to their expectations?

“I expected it to be worse than it was, like a little more grungy,” said William Antinora, freshman student, “and I expected people to be laid-back.”

Fellow freshman, Kanade Yamaguchi agreed. “A lot of people that I met this year were really nice, like the upperclassmen. I thought they’d be ruder, but they’re actually really nice.”

Many freshmen believed that high school would be worse than it actually was, or as Evelyn Kim said, it was “different from the movies.”

When asked about how they felt about the general people, many were happy to say they were pleasantly surprised, they actually liked their teachers, saying that they were helpful with what they do and pretty well-spirited.

Opinions on Del Mar’s bell schedule varied. Some freshmen thought that the idea of having the periods scheduled for different days worked well.

“At first it is very confusing, but once you get used to it, I actually like it,” Antinora remarked, “I actually prefer it over having every class everyday. I like the longer periods.”

On the other hand, a few freshmen, like Emelly Lemus, didn’t like it.

“Sometimes I feel like we should have all of our classes in a day,” she said, “Sometimes we get out at different times, which is okay, but sometimes they get confusing. I almost started walking to my other classes instead of the ones I’m actually supposed to.”

“So, overall I like it here. I think the people are really nice, the campus is pretty nice, and the teachers are really helpful.” Antinora expressed.
