Native American Indian Heritage month

This month was the annual celebration of Native American Heritage Month. November is reserved to show the culture, traditions, and achievements of Native Americans in the United States.

Xochitl Mireles, a Senior, says she is proud of her culture’s unity, and identity, and loves the sense of being at home within her culture. Mireles and her family celebrate significant cultural events like the Aztec New Year and Dia De Los Muertos. Mireles and her family participate in cultural ceremonies every weekend and practice the dances they do in ceremonies every week. The ceremonies are six hours long and they have to be on their feet the entire time, but Mireles says she still loves the feeling of being able to celebrate and do the dances with her family.

Adriana Gomez, a senior, says her family is a part of the Miwok tribe. The Miwoks are original people of Central California and most Miwok people still live there today. Gomez says that due to all the negative connotations about Natives having long hair, she now honors having long hair because it’s a way for Natives to identify themselves. Gomez says she and her family are proud of their Native American heritage.
