This week, Del Mar High School hosted its semi-annual dodgeball tournament. This event was open to all students, with teams consisting of five members each. Each day, teams competed in a best-of-three format, where the winner would earn a point and advance to the next round.
The tournament kicked off on Monday with Team Andy facing Team Chop. Team Andy was at a disadvantage from the start, as one of their players was absent, leading to a 4 vs. 5 match-up.
In round 1, Chop secured a win with only one player remaining. Round 2 saw Team Andy leveling the score, also finishing with just one player left standing, leading to a tiebreaker round. In round 3, Chop won, with two players left on the court. Their win on Monday allowed Chop to advance to the tournament finals.
“You know when we all work we make stuff happen,” David Hernandez(12) said, one of the players on Chop.
Senior Huber Trujillo Flores, a senior on the losing Team Andy, said, “I understand it now, I could’ve done a bit better out there. I could’ve done better catching. The game is the game.”
The next day of the tournament was filled with much anticipation, however, one team failed to show up so the game was canceled.
“It’s very disappointing and I don’t like how they led us on,” Benjamin Griffin(11), a spectator expressed.
No game took place on Wednesday, but Thursday saw the tournament finals with Chop facing off against Team BBL Noah. The final game was played in a best-of-five format for the right to play against the staff on Friday.
In round 1, Chop took the lead securing a win with all five of their players left. In round 2, Chop maintained their streak with two players left standing. Round 3 saw Chop secure the finals and become the student champions with 4 of their players remaining.
“It’s not about how you start it’s about how you finish,” Kyle McClements(11) commented on his team’s win.
Noah Sonntag, a senior and member of BBL Noah, stated, “It was fun, it was nice to see a bunch of different groups of kids come together.”
Today was the final tournament when Chop took on Del Mar High School’s staff.
Round 1 had the staff secure the lead with two players left standing. Round 2 saw our staff defeat our student champions and win with yet again two players left.
“I thought it was out of five,” McClements expressed, confused over the amount of rounds played.
Member of Del Mar’s staff team and Athletic Director Mr. Castaneda said, “It was too easy, I’m hoping the seniors can give us a bit more of a challenge in May.”
