Over this past year, Clash Royale has been skyrocketing in popularity amongst students. Everywhere you go, you’ll most likely see a person or two playing Clash Royale. This mobile game seems to have become the replacement for “Block Blast,” a popular game with students last year.
However, unlike Block Blast, Clash Royale has been continuously popular among teens and adults alike for years since its release and it seems that it’s gained more traction over the past year. It’s become so popular that a club at Del Mar was established this year specifically for playing Clash Royale.
“Mr. Clash royale, bro, he’s, like, super motivational, inspirational,” Brandon Avery, club leader and 11th grader, said, “I’ve just been seeing all the fun the other school has been having with, like, the clash club.”
“We [other Del Mar students] had the same common interests, so having that same common interest made us make the club,” Nick Rienhart, club leader and an 11th grader, said, “we know like a lot of people in the school who also had those interests, so having those same interests made us make the club.”
Although Clash Royale is popular amongst students and has even brought people together, people are starting to believe it is causing negative impacts on students’ focus on schoolwork. Students are starting to notice neglecting schoolwork and homework to play Clash Royale.
“It’s pretty bad. bro, like, I’ve seen everyone just clashing in class,” Avery said, “It locks them out of school. Like they are always just playing Clash.”
Andrew Cerda, a forensics and chemistry teacher at Del Mar, adds that Clash Royale may be addicting to students, taking attention away from school work. “I think it’s almost like a gambler mindset, where you can’t give up mid-game, and then even when they stop playing it, they’re still thinking about it.” Cerda said.
Teachers and staff members all around campus have taken countless students’ cell phones and the likely hood of the students playing Clash Royale is high. Students play it in the halls during their passing periods.
Clash Royale’s popularity has been soaring at Del Mar. People are convincing their friends, family and partners to download and play. Walking around the halls, there is a good chance you’ll see students playing Clash Royale.
