Mother’s Day is a celebration honoring the love and sacrifices that mothers have made for their children. There are different ways to show gratitude for mothers, such as gifting flowers, cards and spending time with them.

For many students at Del Mar, Mother’s Day is more than flowers and cards. It gives them an opportunity to show appreciation to mothers who support them every day. Students believe that Mother’s Day isn’t the only time we should recognize a mother’s care.

Freshman Randy Balleza, explains what he thinks Mother’s Day means as a teenager and how admiration should be shown for women who raise and support their children.

“Showing appreciation by giving chocolate or flowers is nice, but giving materialistic things doesn’t make up for not spending time with your mom or only showing love through store-bought items,” said Balleza.

Not only is spending time with your mother on Mother’s Day important, so is spending time with them in our everyday lives.

“Mother’s Day is not enough to appreciate mothers. We shouldn’t need just Mother’s Day to show your mom that you love her. Mother’s Day should be a reminder about how much you love her, but it shouldn’t be shown in only one day,” said Balleza.

Balleza’s perspective reflects how students view Mother’s Day as more than a holiday centered around gifts. Other students shared traditions they celebrate with their mothers and the qualities they appreciate most about them.

Freshman Karla Moscol, explains how she celebrates Mother’s Day, what she does to show appreciation and what Mother’s Day reminds her of.

“For a surprise, I’d take my mom to the Cheesecake Factory or Olive Garden. Sometimes my mom likes to spend Mother’s Day for herself to hang out with friends,” said Moscol.

Mother’s Day creates many emotions for students. It brings upon feelings of gratitude, excitement and happiness.

“It reminds me of being happy because I always feel that way when giving my mom gifts because she earns it for being a supportive mother,” said Moscol.

For teenagers, Mother’s Day can be a chance to recognize the emotional support, patience and effort their mothers show throughout their lives.

Freshman Helina Abera, shares what she wants people to understand about the holiday, why it matters to teens and things they might not realize about Mother’s Day.

“I want adults to understand that Mother’s Day means so much to students because of how much our moms have sacrificed for us,” said Abera. For Abera, Mother’s Day is also a reminder to pay attention to the quiet acts of care that mothers do each day. It gives students the opportunity to stop and think about what they’ve provided for them.

“I don’t think students realize how much our mothers do for us, like cleaning the house or making food,” said Abera.

Mother’s Day allows students to be appreciative and thankful for what caregivers have done for their children. It is much more than one holiday to share gifts, it is a day to spend quality time with them after all they may have done to support those around them.
