On February 10, Del Mar’s varsity boys basketball team faced off against Gunderson High School in a competitive and physical matchup that ended the Dons’ senior night in a tough 37–17 loss for Del Mar.
From the opening minutes, Gunderson applied intense defensive pressure, making it difficult for Del Mar to execute its usual offensive plays. Quick double teams – when two defenders guard one player at the same time – and tight coverage forced Del Mar to rush passes and take contested shots.
As the game progressed, Gunderson increased its intensity. Fouls became more frequent, disrupting the rhythm of the game.
“When they started playing really aggressive and getting a lot of fouls, it threw us off and gave them more chances to score,” said player Yonatan Ebuy.
During many plays, Del Mar players were often guarded by two or even three defenders at a time. The constant pressure limited open shooting opportunities and prevented the team from moving the ball effectively. Gunderson maintained this defensive intensity throughout the entire game.

“They played very physical, pressured us the whole game, and didn’t give easy shots,” said Ebuy, “It was hard because they were aggressive and kept pushing the pace.”
Later in the game, Del Mar faced another setback when starting point guard Jayvohn Johnson picked up his fifth foul and was disqualified. Losing one of their primary scorers in the final minutes made a comeback even more difficult.
Throughout the game, a big issue that came up was the excessive use of benching players, which directly impacted the players’ confidence and performance throughout the course of the night
Despite the loss, the game highlighted the qualities needed for success on the court.
“Good defense, teamwork, hustle, focus, and confidence — and staying calm under pressure — are what make a good player,” Ebuy explained.
While the result was not in Del Mar’s favor, the team continues to learn from challenging matchups like this one as they prepare for future games.
